Why season your camp oven?
Seasoning your camp oven is very important to do before you start cooking anything. Why is this?
It prepares the surface of the camp oven for cooking, creating a non stick layer on the metal. It also prevents the camp oven from rusting.
How to season your camp oven
You can either season your camp oven in an oven or a bbq at home of in a fire while you are camping like I am doing today.
Heat the camp oven in the fire. This ensures that any moisture is removed and expands the metal which will allow the oil to penetrate easily.
Lightly coat the camp oven in olive oil using a piece of paper towel. Make sure it is a thin layer and there is no pooling.
Return the camp oven to the fire placing it upside down to that the oil wont pool.
The camp oven will start smoking as the oil burns off. Let it heat for about 30 minutes then remove. Allow the camp oven to cool a little the repeat the process.
Once you have finished take the camp oven off and give it a very light coating of oil, making sure there is no pooling.
Using a oil spray would be ideal if you have one available.
